One of the most powerful gifts we can give our parents, especially as they age is to consistently pray for them. We can pray as the Lord on their behalf as touching different areas of their lives; such as their state of mind, health, emotions, soul, and their overall well-being.

Parents at all times may not be seen as perfect due to their human nature, even so, we are expected according to God’s injunction to honour them and seek the Face of our heavenly Father on their behalf.

Below are some more reasons we need to pray for our parents and some inspiring prayers for parents to start with.

Why it is important to pray for parents?

There are biblical reasons to pray for our parents whether they live to deserve or hearty prayers or not. Here are some important reasons to take our parents to the lord in prayer.

1. The Lord Commands it!

God wants us to honour and respectfully deal with our parents, no matter what. Bible verses in (Exodus 20:12, Ephesians 6:1) affirm it.

2. There’s a promise and a blessing attached

Another reason to pray for our parents is to attract the promises and blessings attached to honouring our parents as promised by God. This is visible in (Ephesians 6:2-3).

3. For Guidance and Wisdom

The Lord has given us our parents as our earthly guide, especially when they’ve had an encounter with the Lord, they can by God’s grace be instrumental to helping us walk the path of greatness so that we can fulfill God’s divine purpose. See James 1:5.

4. For Strength and Patience

We need to pray for our parents for strength and grace to be patient in Parenting. Parenthood is not a walk in the park, it’s important to pray that the Lord grants our parents all they require to provide divine assistance as ordained by God to their children. Read (Philippians 4:13, and Galatians 5:22-23) for a more insightful take on this.

5. For a United Family

It is the prayer of every parent to have a united family, so praying for parents for wisdom to build unity in the family among the members of the family is important to help enliven the family’s spiritual well-being. (Ephesians 4:3).

6. To serve as an example to Children

Praying for parents is also setting an example for the kids in the family, this will teach them the importance of interceding for other family members and also show them the need to demonstrate spiritual love, care, and concern for the members of the family. Read (1 Timothy 2:1) for more.
