Prayers for the Holy Communion will be much more relevant when we know the significance of the agelong Christian practice and event. The Eucharist, popularly referred to as the holy communion is one of the most popular Christian events in most Christian denominations and communities around the world and it has its roots in the Scripture as implemented by Christ for believers to do in remembrance of Him till His second coming.

The Holy Communion perfectly represents all that we stand for as believers today, that is, the flesh, blood, and spirit of Christ in us. The holy communion is a constant event to epitomize the remembrance of the inexhaustible sacrifice of Jesus Christ as the redeeming Lamb by whose crucifixion and resurrection we are saved and sanctified.

The Memorial event of the Lord’s Supper is mainly done by believers spread across the globe to remember the death of our Lord and He paying the ultimate sacrifice for our redemption from sin on the Cross.

Bread and wine are used as emblems of the event today, and this is to represent the body and the blood of Jesus Christ respectively as seen in the bible verses on communion. When we eat the bread and drink the wine of communion, we have physically and outwardly performed a spiritual exercise that signifies the intake of the body of Christ by which we gain renewed life, and eternity with the Father. Christ notes:

“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty…And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day ” – John 6:35-50 (NIV)

Benefits of the Holy Communion

It is important that as Christians who have been saved by and in the name of Jesus Christ, we take Communion. This is because it is what Jesus commanded us to do to commemorate his death, for as he said, “this do in remembrance of me.” He sacrificed himself so that we do not die, but have eternal life. Whenever we take part in the Holy Communion, we proclaim the eternal life that the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ brings to us. It also ushers in the pathway of living a victorious Christian life that grants us the future promise of eternal salvation by God.

Furthermore, every time we take the Holy Communion, we are reminded that Jesus Christ is our provider, he makes provision for our physical food, and also nourishment for our spirit.

While everyone is encouraged to take part in the Holy Communion, only Christians who have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Saviour, and believe he died so that they may be saved, can be a partaker of his body and blood (holy communion).

Holy communion Scriptures

Although these criteria can not be strictly enforced as true salvation is a personal affair, anyone who is not truly born again and partakes in holy communion does that unworthily and might attract the damnation of heaven, as seen in 1 Corinthians 11 verses 28 to 30:

  • vs 28. “Let a man [thoroughly] examine himself, and [only when he has done] so should he eat of the bread and drink of the cup.”
  • vs 29.  “For a person who eats and drinks without recognizing the body is eating and drinking judgment upon himself.”
  • vs 30 “For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.”

We must therefore shy off taking holy communion if we are not of full conviction in the saving grace that Christ’s death brings to the world. It is negatively consequential to partake in the supper unworthily. However, in most gatherings, an avenue for instant resolution to come to Christ, accepting his saving grace, and fully yielding to His Lordship is a great decision to make to partake of the Communion.
